Top 12 Tarot Decks

by Re, co-creator of Free Tarot

It can be difficult to choose the right Tarot deck, especially if you are just starting out. Normally, I would just recommend that you look at reviews and pictures on Amazon until you “connect” with a deck that feels right to you. However, I did find a kit that I think might be perfect for beginners …

1. Easy Tarot
My first choice, especially for beginners, is “Easy Tarot: Learn to Read the Cards Once and For All” by Josephine Ellershaw. Josephine created a system for beginners using the Gilded Tarot by Ciro Marchetti, which is one of the decks we use in our Free Online Tarot Card Readings. While I have not personally used this kit, I do own this deck, and it is beautiful. Actually, I just recommended this kit to my sister because she wants to learn Tarot. This set is quite affordable as well.

2. The Wild Unknown
If you‘re a more seasoned Tarot enthusiast, check out The Wild Unknown Tarot Deck by Kim Krans. With over 17, 000 ratings and still ringing in at 5 stars, I took notice! You might want to check out this artwork! From Amazon … “Each of the seventy-eight cards in Krans’ The Wild Unknown is a work of art that explores the mysteries of the natural world and the animal kingdom … feature an original bonus Justice card that speaks to the social movements of our time. Hand drawn in her spare, minimalist style, the striking images invite deep contemplation.” Kim also has a beautiful Wild Unknown Animal Spirit Deck.

3. A Modern take on the Traditional Tarot

The Modern Witch Tarot Deck offers a more modern and empowered version of the traditional Tarot. From Amazon, “With its diversity and all-female celebration of womanhood, this vibrant, fashion-forward, and colorful deck brings fun and fresh air to the tarot!”

4. Beautiful Artwork
I tend to see extra messages in the images on the cards, and the Shadowscapes Tarot by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law is definitely one for beautiful imagery. This is one of my favorite decks and is also one of the decks we use in our Free Online Tarot Card Readings. From Amazon, “Stephanie Pui-Mun Law’s exquisite watercolor artwork blends Asian, Celtic, and fantasy themes inspired by fairy tales, myths, and folklore from cultures worldwide.”

5. A Vibrant Deck for the Modern Mystic
Mystic Mondays Tarot has a modern, feminine and artistic feel. The illustrations are vibrant and include holographic edges. The only downside to this deck is that it sounds like that beautiful holographic edging causes some of the cards to stick together a bit, so you do have to be careful. When you first get them, carefully go through the deck to un-unstick the stuck ones.

6. Every Tarot Fan Needs a Mini Deck
“Using the methods of renowned reader Brigit Esselmont, Everyday Tarot blends mysticism with actionable self-help to create a method for building the life you want, using the ancient wisdom of Tarot.” This is a very nice deck, and it’s one you can carry with you. Just be careful opening the box. See this review.

7. One of My Personal Favorites
I have to include
The Celtic Dragon Tarot by D.J. Conway and Lisa Hunt. This is the second deck I purchased, after the first deck that did not fit me at all and was returned immediately. 😉 Dragons are powerful guardian spirits and will only work with those who are worthy of their effort, so be sure that you are one who respects nature and the magic around you before purchasing this deck. This one is also used in our Free Online Tarot Card Readings.

8. A Divine Deck? Sure!
The
Tarot of the Divine looks like an interesting deck. It has only been out 8 months and has over 3, 500 ratings with 5 stars. “Take a step forward on your spiritual journey with this gorgeously illustrated celebration of deities, folklore, and fairy tales from all over the world.” I would also recommend the book “Beneath the Moon: Fairy Tales, Myths, and Divine Stories from Around the World” as the cards seem to be based on this and will likely help to understand the cards.

9. See the Light!
See the light with the
Light Seer’s Tarot! I might have to buy myself this deck (now that Hay House has apparently fixed whatever quality control issue was going on.) As I’ve said before, I love getting messages from the imagery in cards. What I didn’t say is that Tarot is not my go-to method for card readings. I prefer Oracle cards. However, looking at the images from this deck, I can see that the artistry will help you to remember/learn the meanings. It’s also a beautiful deck. I recommend this one, though it is always ultimately your choice.

10. The Most Positive Deck of All
I added the Affirmators! Tarot Deck to our store just so I could buy it for my niece and other teens ready for Tarot. It is a positive deck with beautiful imagery. Knock Knock has created several wonderful affirmation decks, but the Affirmators! Tarot is totally unique and a great starter deck. “You don’t have to be an age-old sage to interpret these cards!”

11. Here Kitty Kitty!
This whimsical and humorous Cat Tarot deck by Megan Lynn Kott is purrfect for cat lovers. If you would like to spice up your Tarot with the playful nature of cats, this deck might be for you, and it’s on the less expensive side as well. 😉

12. Among the Stars
The Star Spinner Tarot is an inclusive, diverse, LGBTQ Deck of Tarot Cards. They are a modern version of classic Tarot Mysticism. With over 1,600 ratings and 5 stars on Amazon, this one had to go on our list … Let the stars light the way!
